Google is increasingly being perceived as the company that will follow IBM (1965-85) and Microsoft (1985-2005) in dominating the IT industry. This presentation will outline the many business lines that Google is endeavouring to build, and then focus on one particular challenge that it poses.
It's the last in a series of presentations in 5 countries over a 2-year period. The reason it's the last is that the world is now awake to the threat that Google poses to privacy. During the 3 months from announcement of the seminar until the event took place, even The Economist has come to see the light.
(I don't do mainstream topics. There are too many bleeding-edge issues that other people aren't tackling yet; and that's where I should spend my time).
Thanks to Matthew Rimmer of the ANU Faculty of Law for firing the starting-gun, by challenging me to explain the privacy issues to a seminar in December 2005.
