- Joseph Spencer Spinaze (1924-2018)
b. 1 Aug 1924, at South Gundarimba 10km south of Lismore
He worked initially for Piercy and Nott and then for E.J. Eggins,
produce merchants.
He served in the RAAF aged 18-22, in 1942-46, as a fitter and turner at Amberley.
m. 29 Nov 1947, St Paul's Presbyterian, Lismore
m. Doris Margaret Clarke (1925-2012)
Doris was b. early 1925 (6 months after Spencer)
4 children, p. 248 of the Stud Book
Spencer worked for E.J. Eggins most of his life, retiring as its manager c. 1990.
Spencer was very active in many Northern Rivers industry, agricultural, professional,
and service organisations.
He chaired the Lismore Show for 14 years, the regional show organisation for 27 years,
the Queensland and
Northern NSW Seed Merchants Association, and the NSW branch of the Brahman
Breeders’ Association.
He also chaired the committee for the 100th anniversary of the Marquis de
Rays expedition.
That was held at Lismore Showgrounds in 1980.
Barry Sommerlad wrote that "With the small profit made, he overcame
many obstacles and much opposition to purchase land on the corner of the
highway 50km south of Lismore, and build a museum to showcase the story of
the New Italy settlers. He became the founding President
of the New Italy Museum organisation
and under his guidance and with the assistance of many volunteers, the mud
brick buildings which now form part
of the New Italy Museum complex, were constructed".
Unsurprisingly, he was awarded an MBE in 1982, for services to the community,
In 1983 he received a Knighthood in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic
for his contribution to the Italian pioneers.
They established a grazing property, Wingara, at Piora, 50km West of Lismore,
near Casino.
In retirement, they moved to the property to concentrate on raising
Brahman cattle.
